Analysis of Bra Size &
Fit women survey in India
Size & Fit
The most widely used bra size is 36 inches followed by 38 inches.
While B is the most preferred cup size which 44% of the
respondents are using.
It is surprising to note that 36% of the respondents did not
know their cup size.
None of the respondents could correctly state the method of
measuring their bra size. Whatever information is available with the consumers
regarding how to measure their own size has been gathered from the package or
advertisements.
Only 30% of consumers try out different sizes of bras to decide
the correct size before purchasing.
Many of them i.e. 60% of respondents buy the size that they have
been wearing for long.
Colour White
was found to be the most preferred colour for bras followed by black. More
number of pieces are owned by people in basic colour of white in contrast to
fancy colours which are limited to one or two pieces.
Black pieces are also limited to one or two. 50% of the
respondents also like to keep at least one beige piece in their lingerie
collection.
Other colours preferred after plum are pink, peach and blue. It
was found out that the choice of colour for innerwear is guided by the
outerwear colour to a large extent.
Darker colours like plum are preferred more by consumers with
dark complexion as they feel it makes their
innerwear less visible
Fabric 100% cotton and cotton lycra were the
most favorable fabrics opted as first preference by 50% of the respondents
each.
Cotton lace and lace with lycra followed as second preference.
It was seen that consumers were aware that lycra with cotton
enhances the fit of the garment.
Fabrics that were not opted by a majority of consumers were
satin, silk and nylon mainly because of the climatic conditions
Style In reference to style of bra, simple and comfortable are
preferred by 52% of respondents while rest of the 48% opted for fancy and
comfortable bras.
The most preferred style of the bra is found to be the regular
full cup bra that is opted by 84% of the respondents.
14% of respondents also opted for sports bra that is mainly used
while exercising or sleeping at night.
It is surprising to note that only 22% of the respondents opted
for under wired bra, which is technically supposed to provide maximum support,
much required for middle aged women.
It was seen that there is an upward trend in the demand of
padded bras that can help one achieve a fuller figure
Full cup bra is
the most popular style offered by most of the manufacturers.
Strapless and
Padded bras are second in popularity offered by 80% of manufacturers each.
Only 50% of
manufacturers are making under wired bras while sports bra (vest, not
technically a sports bra) used by beginners or at the time of exercising are offered
by 55% of manufacturers.
Sizes Brassieres are available in the sizes
ranging from 28-46 inches.
But majority of
products are offered in the size range of 30-38 inches.
Very few sizes are offered in extreme sizes.
It also emerged out of the survey that only
30% of the manufacturers are offering their products in various cup sizes i.e.
A, B, C, D.
Majority of them i.e.70% are offering their
products only in one cup size, generally B.
For the product to fit well on the body it
is very important to make various cup sizes available.

What can I do?
ANSWERS may be suitable for
you.
It’s
a difficult time getting the right size because one of the breasts is larger
than the other. What to do??
All
women have one breast that is larger than the other does. Sometimes the
difference is noticeable, most often it isn't. If the difference is significant,
try a bra with stretch fabric in the cup or a bra with fiberfill. Also, you can
adjust the strap so the larger breast is looser than the smaller breast strap.
Always fit the cup size to the fuller breast first.
Do
the cups fit smoothly?
If
the cup is not filled out, you may need a smaller cup size. If there is
overflow at the top or at the underarms, you may want to try a larger cup size
or a fuller shape bra for more coverage. In India, still bras are not easily
available with all the cup sizes. Mainly teenagers have to suffer a lot during
development of Full Breast from Breast Bud stage.
Can
you run your finger under the band in front?
It
should be snug, but not tight. If it's tight, you need a larger band size, or a
looser hook placement.
Is
there a right way to put on a bra?
(For
front hook Bra style)
Slip
the straps over your shoulder.
Bend
forward at the waist, and ease your breasts naturally into the cups.
Adjust
your breasts so the nipples are centered into the fullest point of the cup.
The
cup should completely contain the breast (with the exception of push-up
styles).
Hook
the closure at the middle position.
Stand
upright.
Adjust
the straps so the breasts are at a comfortable and attractive height.
Ensure
that the back adjustment is snug without being too tight.
Does
the back of bra ride up?
This
may indicate the cups are too small or the cups are pulled too high. Check the
shoulder straps and adjust to a comfortable length, ensuring straps do not cut
into the shoulders and back of the bra remain horizontal.
The
cups of the bra wrinkle. Why don't they fit smoothly?
Cups
should completely contain each breast. But due to different in size or improper
cup size, wrinkle may appear in both cups or one of the bra-cup.
The
bra is very uncomfortable, cutting and binding when during movement. Is it due
to the wrong size?
May
be. Hook the back closure less tightly or try the next larger band size.
Also,
if your bra has narrow sides, it may be the wrong style for you.
Try
a bra with wider sides.
The
straps keep falling off the shoulders. What should I do?
The
cups may be too big.
Since
you're not filling out the top of the cup, your straps slide down your
shoulder.
Take
care when you put on the bra, bend in front to fill the cup with breast.
Your
shoulder bone structure may be drooping type, unable to hold the straps.
Try
a smaller cup size.
Stretch
marks running up and down the bust. What's going on?
Those
stretch marks can be caused by not wearing a bra or wearing one with loose
support. The bust tissue is breaking down and the bust is dangling - hence, the
stretch marks. The remedy is to wear a well constructed, supportive bra.
However, note that even a smaller bust can get stretch marks if the right bra
isn't worn.
Is
there a right way to put on panties?
Yes.
Step into the panty and pull it up to the correct position on your body,
centering yourself to ensure the crotch is pulled forward. Run your fingers
around the leg openings from the front to the back seat, placing the back seat
to cup the buttocks. Then run your fingers around the waistband to set it
evenly around the waist.
Where
the panty crotch is supposed to fit?
The
crotch should fit naturally against the body, without binding or excessive
fabric at the front or back. Pull the panty forward so that the front crotch
seam is showing - it shouldn't slip backwards. Crotch is meant to give more
comfort to labia and moisture, secretion are absorbed well.
The
panty waistband keeps bunching up and rolling over. What to do?
You're
probably wearing the wrong style or size.
The
waist should be snug, but not binding and stay in place comfortably.
You
should also be able to pull on the panty easily over your hips.
Try
a smaller size or different style or different brand.
The
legs of the panties are really binding in the skin; even get grooves and rashes
along the thighs. What are the alternatives?
Legs
should not cut or bind at the thigh.
Then
check how you're wearing your panty - are the leg openings arched evenly from
side to side?
Is
the fabric skewed or bunched?
If
you're wearing the panty properly and it's still uncomfortable, try a hi cut
style.
Try
changing size, or style or brand till you are comfortable.
The
panties keep riding up. It is embarrassing to adjust panty every time. Also
can’t go to closets to tug them into place, so what to do?
Get
the right size! A proper fit means the panty is balanced and symmetrical,
cupping the buttocks evenly. Try new size, style and brand till you are
comfortable
When
is it time to replace my panties?
If
the leg bands or waistbands are stretched out.
If
the panty constantly rides up or just doesn't fit the way it used to.
If the material at the seams or in the body
is frayed.
If
you'd be really embarrassed if you were in an accident and had to go to the
hospital in those things!
When
you are embarrassed to keep it for drying on the cloths line, and others see to
it.
Does
the center seam lie against the breastbone, without gaps between cups?
You
should try a larger size or maybe a different style. The cup of the bra is too
small if it pulls away and does not lie flat.
Is
the bottom of the bra, front and back, straight or slightly lower in the back?
The
lower edge of the band should anchor below the shoulder blades. The lower the
back fits, the more support you get.
I
bulge over the top and sides of my bra. What's the solution?
First
check to make sure you are in the right size. Either have a measurement taken
or check the size or your bra. You may need a larger cup size. Or maybe you
actually need a bra for fuller shapes in the size you are currently wearing.
Underwire
bras can be so uncomfortable - poking on the sides and pressuring my rib cage.
What to do?
Make
sure you're wearing the right size and support level for your figure.
A
cup size that is too small places the end of the underwire right on the tender
breast tissue, so you may need a larger cup size.
Some
full-breasted women experience poking on the sides, even when wearing the
correct size.
